Tiny Wings HD is the latest version of the classic iOS game called, wait for it…Tiny Wings. The premise is simple, you are a bird that has no earthly business flying thanks to your, wait for it… Tiny Wings. You must use the landscape to to your best advantage to swoop through the air by picking up speed as you accelerate down hills and then launching yourself off the next upward incline into the air. But the night is creeping up, so you must get as far as possible before nightfall. You see. Simple.
Ludicrously simple to play but tricky to master is the clichéd order of the day here. You tap and hold your finger on the screen to accelerate down dale and then release your finger at the optimum moment to launch yourself into the air.
Coins and power-ups litter your path and increase your score, but it’s a compromise between collecting as many as possible and covering as much ground in the air as possible. ‘Fever’ mode is activated by perfectly touching down and launching again as smoothly as possible from each hill, but get it wrong and your bird grinds to a halt and you have to build up your momentum again before the night closes in.
This is exactly the sort of game that mobile devices were made for, where simplicity is the order of the day and that mysterious ‘one more go’ factor is crucial. As a quick pick-up-and-play game, Tiny Wings more than makes the grade.
Tiny Wings HD is a minor improvement over the original, primarily in graphic terms, but the old adage ‘if it ain’t broke…’ rings true here and the simplicity of the gameplay and the furiously addictive qualities of the game make it more then worth the £1.99 asking price.
