Riptide GP is a gorgeous jet ski racing game with astounding 3D graphics and bundles of gameplay magic to be uncovered. Your smartphone deserves this download.

WHAT'S IT LIKE?

It has been six months or so since we first laid eyes on Riptide GP and it’s still the best smartphone racer out there. Such is the strength of the Android and iOS download’s graphics that even some Nintendo 3DS titles look antiquated by comparison. The water you dash across is superbly rendered with every splash and crashing wave setting the scene for a truly believable portable gaming experience.

With 12 courses to compete in using 6 differently-powered vehicles via 3 gameplay modes, there’s plenty of value for money to be garnered from Riptide GP. As fans of Nintendo’s Wave Race franchise will know, jet ski racing is a completely different beast to the four-wheeled kind. You’ll have to hug corners much more tightly and learn exactly when to slam the accelerator in order to become a master of your domain. Thankfully, the app's motion controls ease you towards championship-winning status without any unnecessary hassle.

Although the dedication Riptide GP requires is occasionally frustrating, mastering the app is a rewarding experience. One that is only improved by the addition of flips and spins which you can perform to gain vital speed boost points. The downside of all this attention to graphical and gaming detail is that it will drain your battery like no man’s business. There’s also no multiplayer mode for you to test your skills against human competition.

No matter, Riptide GP is polished beyond comprehension for a smartphone title. Sometimes you shouldn’t tamper with perfection and this download is pretty much unbeatable.

It’s hard to think how anyone would regret spending £1.49 on Riptide GP. Unless they have a severe aversion to fun.
