Google Maps is the King of navigation tools. Whether you want to know where you are, where you're going or how to get from one to the other, Google Maps has the answer. Offering directions on foot, by car or on public transport, the ability to bookmark favourite locations and a wealth of places of interest, plus much more, Google Maps has everything you need to get around.
Google Maps is found as standard on all Android and Apple smartphones and tablets. What's more, being one of Google's own applications, there are plenty of extra features and function on this version of the app that you won't find anywhere else.
Open the app and it will immediately find your current location and show the surrounding area. You can choose from a variety of maps, showing Traffic, Satellite or Terrain views of the landscape. There's also the option to make Transit Lines visible or use Google's Latitude feature, which allows you to share your location with friends and family.
Normal smartphone functions are of course here, allowing you to pinch and swipe your way around the screen, zooming in and out of the map and changing your compass point. Zoom in close and points of interest, road names, business and shops are pinpointed and labelled. Unbelievably simple, it's a quick and easy way to find out about your local environment.
Unique to the Android version of the Google Maps app is the Navigation tool. Click into this part of the app from the arrow at the top left of the screen to turn the app in to a clever, neatly laid out satnav. You can speak your destination or type it in manually before being given a typical satnav screen complete with turn-by-turn and voice navigation.
A feature-packed navigation app. It's hard to believe it’s yours for free…
The ultimate tool for maps and directions, jam-packed with features and functions for added usability.
