Our wish list for the Windows 8 device
Microsoft turned the technology world upside down yesterday by unveiling its brand new Surface tablets to the world. A 10.6-inch device running either Windows 8 or the less powerful Windows RT – depending on how much you spend – these portable wonders are aimed directly at any wavering members of the iPad faithful.
Although specs for the tablet are thin on the ground, that still hasn’t stopped us drawing up an apps wish list of possible downloads for the Surface and its stylish Type and Touch Cover keyboards.
Netflix
Although we know very little about specific Windows 8 apps, Microsoft’s Steven Sinofsky yesterday announced Netflix will be available for the tablet and PC platform. An essential download from the world’s most popular movie streaming service.
Halo
As Nintendo knows, there’s nothing like a home-cooked game to boost your big hardware push. Although Xbox functionality hasn’t been mooted, Halo is THE Xbox title, so a Master Chief-featuring app makes sense.
Xbox SmartGlass
Already pencilled in for Windows 8 tablets, Xbox SmartGlass will allow gamers to use their Surface as an Xbox controller and second screen for TV shows like Game Of Thrones. How cool is that?
Microsoft Office
We’ve used Pages on our iPad and spent half the time crying out for a keyboard. With the Surface’s Type and Touch Covers, an end to our anguish is finally in sight. All the tablet needs is Office which is a nailed-on certainty.
Kinect
There’s not been much app compatibility with Microsoft’s Kinect bar the limited Kinectimals and Kinect Star Wars. Now developers have a 10.6-inch touchscreen to play with, the possibilites for this casual gaming juggernaut are greatly expanded.
